The short-tempered mallard is an octogenarian. Today is Donald Duck’s 80th birthday. Donald Duck first appeared in the Silly Symphonies short, “The Wise Little Hen,” on June 9, 1934. He quickly became one of the most loved characters. In fact, at one point Donald became more popular than Mickey Mouse.
Ever since, Donald has had a fantastic career. He won an Oscar for his role in 1943’s Der Fuehrer’s Face, an anti-Nazi propaganda short.
In Finland, protest votes are cast as Donald Duck, whereas we typically vote Mickey Mouse.
He’s appeared in more theatrical releases than any character in the Disney catalog, including Mickey (178 to 137). Many of those include educational appearances, but it speaks to the character’s overwhelming popularity.
So, if you see the old chap today, wish h a Happy Birthday and buy him a pair of pants.
